Trauma in childhood or adult years comes in many forms. Physical and sexual abuse can leave lasting scars on your ability to trust others and form healthy relationships. More subtle, but just as damaging is verbal and emotional abuse and neglect by caregivers. The lasting pain and confusion of growing up in a household with an alcoholic parent can leave terrible wounds to our self worth.

Children learn to cope with the pain of trauma any way they can. Often the coping skills in childhood such as avoidance, aggression, substance use, and self harm no longer serve us well as adults.
