Each child experiences trauma in their own way. Consequently, some children will go on to express symptoms while others seem largely unaffected. If you know or suspect your child has experienced trauma and are concerned about their behavior or other symptoms, you may consider engaging a therapist with childhood trauma training.
I work with children age 6-18 using a specific therapy called Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or TF-CBT. TF-CBT helps caregivers and children feel validated in their feelings of confusion, hurt, or guilt. The childs emotional intelligence is bolstered while coping skills are fine tuned. Then the child is engaged in a systematic desensitization activity using art and a written account of the trauma. As the therapy progresses the child is less anxious and symptoms of trauma lessen considerably. This therapy is usually lengthy, 15-22 sessions.
